Abstract
The whole planet suffers from climate anomalies, such as flooding, heat waves and hurricanes. Korea is not an exemption. While global temperature has increased in 0.7 °C during the last 150 years, a rise of 1.5 °C, due to urbanization, has been reported for Korea. Many experts have pointed the increase of greenhouse gas concentration as the cause behind global warming. From the standpoint of preparedness against global warming, not only is reduction of greenhouse gases important, but so is adaptation to these changes. The Earth is already getting hotter. Adaptation strategies should apply extensively across all areas of society, such as land planning, water resources, agriculture, public health, etc. Additionally, each region’s specific characteristics should be reflected in the future strategies considering regional climate variations. A good example can be found in the evolution of average precipitation volume, which is increasing in South Korea but is on a decreasing trend in North Korea and Japan. Finally, it is necessary to underline the importance of communication with the public. This is because, although adaptation strategies are going to bring along changes in our lifestyle, people would not be patient about new changes without having pretty much confidence on the efficiency of adaptation measures.
