The paper here briefly describes the life and work of Baron Alexander von Stael-Holstein — a great scholar in Asiatic studies, who was successively Assistant Professor of Sanskrit in Imperial University in St. Petersburg, Sanskrit professor of Peking National University, and Professor of Central Asian Philology in Harvard University, who had widely traveled in Eurasia and America and tried hard to develop Asiatic studies in Asia and contributed his whole life to the modernization of Chinese learning and the cultural exchange between the east and west.
